The occupancy and staffing data presented (except for staff turnover date - see note below) on this page are extracted from the Adult Care Home Annual and Semi-Annual Reports which are prepared for the Kansas Department on Aging by the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare Office of Social Policy Analysis, Doug Marty, Project Coordinator. The data is gathered on an annual and semi-annual basis via web-based reports submitted to KDOA by Kansas licensed nursing facilities, nursing facilities for mental health, intermediate care facilities for the mentally retarded, assisted living facilities, residential health care facilities and home plus facilities (for definitions of these facilities click here).
Bed occupancy data are calculated by multiplying the number of licensed beds by the number of days in the reporting period to determine the maximum number of inpatient days. The number of actual patient days is then divided by the maximum number of days to yield the occupancy rate. Beginning with the July-December 2007 reporting period, an alternative measure of occupancy for Assisted Living and Residential Health Care facilities is being calculated. Assisted Living apartments and Residential Health Care units can have more than one licensed bed, so apartment/unit occupancy is now being determined by dividing the number of occupied apartments/units by the total number of apartments/units at the end of the reporting period.
Staffing information is calculated based upon direct care staffing and resident census information for a reference week specified by KDOA. Effective with the 2007 Semi-Annual Reports, direct care staff is defined as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, medication aides, licensed mental health technicians, nurse aides, nurse aide trainees and paid nutrition assistants. Prior reports included social services staff and thus are not directly comparable to current information. Registered nurses who serve as Directors of Nursing in facilities over 60 beds are not included in direct care staffing ratios. Staffing ratios are calculated by dividing the number of hours direct care staff worked in a 24-hour period by the number of residents in the facility during that same period. The ratios do not necessarily show the number of direct care staff present at any given time, or reflect the amount of care given to any one resident.
Staff turnover data are drawn from Schedule J of the Medicaid Cost Report and include all Medicaid certified nursing facilities including hospital long-term care units. Facilities that are only Medicare certified or only state licensed are not included. Turnover data are for the state fiscal year period (July 1 - June 30).
Occupancy and staffing information (except for turnover data) are both self-reported by facilities and are not independently verified. Please note that the data presented here is based upon those facilities which submitted timely and usable reports, thus it includes most but not all of the licensed facilities during the reporting period. Beginning January 2006, the data are represented by the entire Adult Care Home Annual and Semi-Annual Reports along with several summary charts. Prior to that time period, available data is represented by summary charts and tables. Beginning with the 2007 Annual Report, Home Plus facilities are included, and new data concerning Universal/Multi-task Workers, Special Care Unit/Hopsice Services and services offered to non-residents are included.Questions about this data should be directed to Vera VanBruggen at 785-296-1246 or by e-mail at Vera.VanBruggen@aging.ks.gov
